Journey Prep - "Little Picture"
In addition to having "big picture" intentions like goals and aspirations, it is also very helpful to have a "little picture" intention of settling down the mind and body. This will help you ease into the journey with a lightness of being and a welcoming curiosity. Here are some materials that you can use to help you get ready for the journey.
Sighing Breath (5 min) - This is a wonderful way to prepare for a journey. Try out this short, research-based method of rapidly entering a relaxed state. Many of our clients find sighing breath a great, user-friendly alternative to mindfulness meditation.
Here is a link to a research paper on sigh-breath. It was shown to be more effective than mindfulness meditation for quickly reducing anxiety and boosting mood.
Smoke Flow (5 min) - A well-established mindset for a psychedelic journey is to "let go and go with the flow." A journey can be seen as a microcosm of the macrocosm; just as we must often let life pass through us and trust the process, so too, a great intention is to just let the medicine pass through us and trust the process. (I made this video right after a wonderful journey, where "flow" was still resonating.)
Jewish Informed Psychedelic Wisdom
One of the ways we support our non-profit clinic is to provide practical skills training for ketamine therapy providers. Here are some concepts we teach, based on Jewish wisdom and clinical observations, that help people contextualize and integrate journey experiences. Also included are some facilitation essentials and ketamine neuroscience.
13 Attributes Of Mercy
Here is a booklet based on the work of 16th-century mystic and kabbalist Moshe Kordovero. This work contains many tones that resonate with Jewish-informed psychedelic practice. As you read, consider how we might approach and view ourselves through the prism of the 13 attributes.
About
13 Attributes of Mercy is a practical, easy-to-understand guide that teaches how to use the attributes as a tool for personal transformation and spiritual growth.
This guide enables people of all levels of Jewish learning and observance to access one of the deepest and most important Kabbalistic texts, the Palm Tree of Devorah (Tomer Devorah), written by Rabbi Moshe Cordevero (the Ramak), z’tkl. For each attribute, we bring a wonderfully accessible English translation from the sefer.
There is a centuries-old tradition to learn the Palm Tree of Devorah in the weeks leading up to Rosh HaShana (in Ellul) through Yom Kippur. Learning about and implementing the 13 Attributes of Mercy is a highly effective way to reconnect and return to HaShem.
